01

Types of Work Permits

Kenya offers several classes of work permits depending on the nature of your work. The most common are Class D (for specific employment), Class G (for investors), and Class I (for approved religious or volunteer work). Each has distinct requirements and conditions.

The type of permit you need depends on your profession, the nature of your role, and your relationship with the employing organization. Choosing the correct class is essential — applying for the wrong category can result in delays or rejection.

02

Application Process and Requirements

Applications are submitted through the Department of Immigration Services. Required documents typically include a valid passport, passport-sized photographs, a formal job offer or contract, academic and professional certificates, and a letter of justification from the employer.

Employers must demonstrate that the position cannot be filled by a Kenyan citizen and may need to provide a skills transfer plan. Processing times vary but typically range from 4 to 12 weeks.

03

Renewals and Compliance

Work permits are typically issued for one to two years and must be renewed before expiry. Working on an expired permit is a serious offence that can result in fines, detention, and deportation.

Both employers and employees have compliance obligations. Employers must report changes in employment status, and employees must not work outside the scope of their permit conditions.
