Overview

Navigating Kenya's Immigration System

Kenya welcomes foreign nationals for tourism, business, employment, investment, and permanent settlement. The immigration system is administered by the Kenya Department of Immigration Services through the eCitizen digital platform, which handles applications for Electronic Travel Authorisations (ETAs), work permits, investor permits, dependent passes, and other immigration documents.

Since January 2024, Kenya transitioned to the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, replacing traditional visas for short-term visits. Most nationalities require an ETA costing approximately USD 30 for stays of up to 90 days. Longer stays and specific activities such as employment or investment require dedicated permits.

Work permits are classified by category (Class A through M), with Class D being the most common for employed foreign professionals. Investor permits, dependent passes, and special permits are also available depending on individual circumstances.

Understanding the specific requirements for your nationality — including bilateral agreements, double taxation treaties, property ownership restrictions, and dual citizenship provisions — is essential for a smooth transition. That is where LHK & Company Advocates can help.
